How To Install an HD Lace Front Wig Like a Professional

There are few hairstyles that offer the glamour HD lace wigs provide, which is why they remain a popular choice among people looking to upgrade their appearance. Whether you are new to HD lace front wigs or wear them often, this article will teach you how to achieve an install that looks natural and lasts long.

Step One: Prepare Your Natural Hair

Your natural hair preparation is the foundation of your wig install, so it’s important that it’s as smooth as possible.

Braid your hair down: Cornrows or flat twists are great options for creating a flat, smooth surface. If you have short hair, use a brush to slick it back.

Protect your hair: Use a wig cap the same color as your complexion. This will protect your natural hair while giving the appearance of scalp.

Keep cap in place: Use hairspray or adhesive spray to keep the wig cap in place and keep it from moving when applying your wig.

Step Two: Get Your Wig Ready

When prepping your wig, make the necessary customizations to ensure a seamless fit.

Bleach and pluck: If necessary, pluck the hairline and bleach the knots. At Hair and Silk, all of our HD lace wigs are pre plucked and pre bleached so you don’t have to do these extra steps! Here’s a list of our most popular HD Lace Wigs:

Adjust the lace: Add a thin layer of foundation that matches your skin complexion to the inside of the lace front wig.

Alter the fit: Cut off extra lace around the ears and adjust the sizing of the wig with the wig band.

Step Three: Protect Your Skin

Having clean and healthy skin is key for longer lasting installs that look more natural.

Clean your skin: Use alcohol to remove oil and dirt near the hairline. This allows the adhesive to work properly and prevents the wig from lifting prematurely.

Protect your hairline: Use a skin protector around hairline to prevent any irritation that make be caused by the wig glue.

Step Four: Install the HD Lace Wig

When installing a wig, you have complete control of how it will look. Consider what look you are going for ahead of time.

Determine wig placement: Before applying adhesive, try on the wig and determine how you want it to lie on your head.

Apply wig glue: Apply wig glue in front of your hairline where the lace will lie and use the end of a pintail comb or a popsicle stick to smooth it out evenly.

Secure the lace: align the lace with the glue and press down into it. Use a pintail or rattail comb to press into the glue. Avoid using your fingers as the oil from your fingers may loosen the adhesive.

Melt lace into skin: Use an elastic wig band to tie around your hairline as tight as you can. Leave on for 20 minutes to an hour for maximum hold.

Step Five: Cut Off Excess Lace

Trimming excess lace is another opportunity to customize your wig.

Choose proper tool: use nails scissors, preferably curved, or an eyebrow razor to cut off excess lace. Do not use a standard pair of scissors as it may create a blunt cut that looks unrealistic.

Choose proper method: Cut in a zig-zag motion to create a more realistic appearance. Cutting straight across will create a line of demarcation that looks unnatural.

Trim properly: Trim the appropriate amount of lace off the wig. Too much trimming will ruin the beauty of the hairline, while too little trimming creates a “wiggy” look.

Step Six: Blend Lace Into Skin

Blending the lace as much as possible is what makes an install look natural.

Use melting spray: Add lace melting spray to hairline for an extra “melt” into skin. Proceed to tie the hairline down with elastic wig band. Be sure the melting spray does not contain alcohol as this can lift the adhesive on your lace.

Use makeup: Use foundation to blend lace into skin. Be careful not to use too much as this can cause buildup on your lace and make it look unrealistic.

Step Seven: Style Your Hair

Once your wig is installed you can get creative and style as you like!

Choose your part: Decide how you want to part your hair. Some popular parting styles are middle, side and deep side parts. You can also do a not part flip over or wear your hair straight back.

Baby hair: If you want baby hair, part out small sections of hair at the hairline and cut short. Curl with small curling iron and add mousse and hairspray to hold in place. Use an edge brush to style.

Use hot tools: Use a flat iron, curling iron, curling wand, or crimper to style hair and take your look to the next level.
